It was a beautiful campground. My family and I stayed the week of July 4th and it was not crowded at all. It was a perfect location. Close to the Virginia Creeper Trail and North Carolina.
The rangers were great and the bathrooms were clean!
I love this place,i would live here year round if i could. The lake is beautiful, fun and so relaxing. the campgrounds are so nice. The staff was amazing. Went out of their way to help. Showers and facilities were very clean. I go every year now with my family. Cant wait to get back there.
What a beautiful and odd campground. Everything that we wanted to do, fishing, swimming, boating was in one place. The campground that we actually camped in was 2.9 miles from that. The campsite was beautiful. Like a cave of dense mountain cover. I was told that I needed a reservation. To get the reservation I had to call someone out west that knew nothing about the campground. Could answer no questions. Very nice lady at the campground entrance had my reservation and told me to go to my sight and the attendant would check me in. Waited two hours. 90% of the sites were vacant for the two days that we were there. Got tired of waiting, went to lake. A hateful, bitter old man, one of the attendants, made it clear that I was not supposed to be there without the pass that the other attendant was supposed to give me. Went back to campsite and the attendant finally showed up. My first time there so I had questions about bears, firewood, etc. Just trying to make small talk. He did his best to make me feel like a fool. Up until this point I could have just forgotten the whole thing and remembered how beautiful the campground is. This is why I am doing this review. I was there with my teenage son. He accidentally locked the keys in our camper just as it was getting dark. Everything, except our two bikes, was in the camper. Everything. No phone service. Yeah, nobody`s fault but ours. I went to the attendant`s camper. He spoke to me through his window. Never got up. I asked for any kind of help. He said he could not touch my vehicle and tried to dismiss me. He said I could ride my bike to the front gate, (he had a golf cart) and maybe the Wi-Fi would work or I could ride to Damascus 10.9 miles and maybe get a tow truck. It was totally dark by this time. He could not have cared less and seemed irritated that I came to him. I wonder if he would he have cared if it had been his grandson. I broke out a window. $400.00. Again, my fault.
What I learned from this: Be careful how you treat people. These kind of things have a way of coming back around to you. Bear Tree is beautiful. The attendants are jerks.
Convenient location to Damascus and Grayson Highlands. Campsites are fairly good. Bath houses are in desperate need of an update. Recreation area is nice. Canoes appeared to be available. Large shower house.
